What is Spill Kit?

A spill kit is simply a ready-made pack of items — such as absorbent materials, contaminated chemical waste bags, gloves and brooms — that provides workplaces with a complete (or near complete) set of items for staff to conduct the spill cleanup.

Benefits of Spill Kit

The purpose of a spill kit is to contain and clean up a spill as quickly and efficiently as possible; this is not only for the safety of workers and others but also for the protection of the environment.

Types of Spill Kit

Generally, there's 4 types of spill kits on the market. These are:

1.Oil and fuel (hydrocarbon) spill kits

2.Chemical (HAZCHEM) spill kits

3.Marine spill kits

4.Universal spill kits

Within each type of spill kit there are a tailored set of materials and equipment, to assist with the successful containment, clean-up and disposal of a chemical leak or spill.

What are the Applications of Spill Kit?

The purpose of your spill kit is to reduce risk to people, property and the environment during a spillage incident. Your kit is an assortment of materials and equipment that will facilitate the containment, clean-up and disposal of the spilled chemicals and any resulting effluent.

1.First of all, put up caution tape and secure the area.

2.Then, clog the floor drains with spill socks to prevent the spill from spreading further.

3.Next, open the spill kit and then put on the provided gloves, goggles and coveralls.

4.Now, begin by placing absorbents onto the spill. Start from the outside and work your way towards the centre.

5.Keep collecting the used absorbents in a bag and label it as hazardous waste.

6.Once the kit contains the spill, disinfect the affected area.

7.Collect the used spill pads in the same labelled bag used for the absorbents.

8.Then, seal the bag with a twist tie to prevent any further contamination.

Components of Spill Kit

The spill kit should contain PPE, absorbent materials, a scoop or brush, and a waste disposal container. In the event a chemical is released into the environment, contain the chemical spill as much as possible, alert co-workers, and contact EH&S for assistance.

Maintenance Tips for Spill Kit

Tip 1: Train Personnel

Anyone who may have reason to use the spill kit needs to be trained in spill containment. However, they should also know how to maintain the spill kit. Avoid problems by assigning someone to check the equipment regularly so it will get done rather than shuffled to someone else.

Tip 2: Check And Maintain Spill Kits

To ensure the spill kits are taken care of and ready to use in the event of a spill, you should check on them from time to time. It's recommended that you do a proper check at least every three months, though it is necessary to do this more often in high-risk spaces. This should be part of the regular maintenance schedule in your business.

Tip 3: Ensure Absorbents Are Replaced

Depending on the size of the spill, you may use quite a lot of absorbents. Anyone using the kit should be aware that they need to replace the items in the kit. It's quite dangerous if you have a spill and then go to use the spill kit only to find that it's empty.

Tip 4: Get Rid Of Poor-quality Items

If the item has been used, please throw it away in time, wrap it in a plastic trash can, and replace it with a new one in time.

Tip 6: Place Kits Where They Will Be Used

This product should be placed near items that are prone to leakage. If leakage occurs, the leakage problem can be dealt with in time to avoid causing a larger leakage.

FAQ

Q: What does require in a spill kit?

A: At the bare minimum, PPE kits for spills should include gloves, safety goggles, absorbent materials, and bags to contain the spilled materials.

Q: What is the regulation on spill kit?

A: When do you require a spill kit? The answer is relatively simple — and stated in Model Work Health and Safety (WHS) Regulations. Your workplace will require a spill kit if there is any risk of a hazardous chemical (solid or liquid form) spill or leak.

Q: How often should spill kits be checked?

A: Spill kits must be checked every 6 months to ensure all components are present, in good condition and within expiration date and date of verification recorded. All spills must be cleaned by personnel who are properly trained and have the proper equipment to handle infectious materials and hazardous chemicals.

Q: Do you need PPE for every spill?

A: The level of protection required varies with the nature of the spill. Ideally, the spilled liquid will be identified prior to response. This helps responders determine the types of PPE needed for safe response and helps avoid the use of more costly response equipment if not needed.

Q: Do spill kits need to be sealed?

A: In addition, the spill kits should be regularly inspected to ensure they are properly replenished. Adding a seal to the spill kits (pictured to the right) will help simplify the inspection process.

Q: Where should a spill kit be stored?

A: Therefore, kits for cleaning up spills can also be placed anywhere around the workplace. Be it on a wall, under a workbench, or even inside the cab of a truck. From laboratory areas to outdoor storage tanks. In waste collection areas, on fuel pumps, and just about everywhere else you can think of!

Q: Do spill kits have a shelf life?

A: How long do spill kits last? As above, the absorbents in a spill kit have a shelf life of about five years. If you've stored the kit indoors, away from temperature extremes and not in direct sunlight, then they can typically last longer than the five years.

Q: Do you need training to use a spill kit?

A: Staff should all be trained in how to use the spill kits and what materials to be used for certain spillages.

Q: Do spill kits have to be yellow?

A: General Purpose Absorbents are usually grey. Oil Only Absorbents are usually white. Chemical Absorbents are often Yellow or green or are sometimes pink.

Q: How many spill kits do I need?

A: The nearer the kit to the locations where chemicals or other hazardous materials are regularly used, the quicker you can stop the spread of a spill. As each kit's contents typically are one-time use only, you'll need at least two kits, Ketchum advises.

Q: Do spill kits absorb water?

A: If the oil spill hasn't been contaminated with water, then our Universal Spill Kit can be used – these have grey socks and pads. This kit will soak up anything non-hazardous, making it helpful in clearing up water, coolants, drinks, paint and other spilt liquids, including oil.

Q: Can I make my own spill kit?

A: Place gloves and safety glasses or goggles in one bag, disposable suit and boot/shoe covers in another bag and the remainder of the lock-type and polyethylene bags with twist ties in another bag. Place bags, dust pan, whisk broom and paper towels on top of bags of absorbent in can and secure the can lid.

Q: What color is a spill kit?

A: Chemical spill kit absorbents are colour coded yellow in accordance with BS 7959 part 3 and will absorb almost any liquid from water through to hazardous materials such as corrosive acids, solvents, and aggressive chemicals. Oil selective spill kits (white and blue).

Q: Is pH paper in a spill kit?

A: Equipment in the spill kit could include: Wisk broom and dust pan (available at home improvement stores) Sponge. pH paper.

Q: Is there pH paper in a spill kit?

Q: How do you clean up a base spill?

A: Neutralize acids and bases, if possible.
