1. Start with the Cargo Dimensions

The pallet footprint should match the products being loaded.

Measure the length and width of cartons, bags, drums, crates, containers, machinery components, or other packaged goods.

Ideally, the cargo should stay within the pallet footprint without excessive overhang.

2. Confirm Static, Dynamic, and Racking Load

One of the most common pallet purchasing mistakes is using a single load number for every operating condition.

Plastic pallet load capacity normally needs to be considered under three conditions.

Static Load

Static load refers to the load supported while the pallet remains stationary on a flat surface.

Dynamic Load

Dynamic load applies when a loaded pallet is lifted and transported by a forklift or similar handling equipment.

Racking Load

Racking load applies when a pallet is supported by warehouse rack beams rather than sitting fully on the floor.

A pallet suitable for floor storage is not automatically suitable for beam racking.

When requesting a quotation, do not simply provide the cargo weight. Tell the supplier whether the pallet will be stored on the floor, moved by forklift, stacked, or placed on racks.

 

3. Check the Warehouse Racking System

If the pallet will be stored on warehouse racks, the rack dimensions should be confirmed before selecting the pallet.

Important information includes rack beam spacing, rack depth, number of pallets per bay, cargo weight, load distribution, pallet orientation, support-bar conditions, and storage temperature.

Plastic pallets may flex when supported between rack beams. The actual racking performance therefore depends on pallet structure, material, steel reinforcement, load distribution, and rack span.

For demanding warehouse applications, a product such as a Heavy Duty Rackable Plastic Pallet may be more suitable than a lightweight export pallet.

Buyer Tip

If you are unsure whether a pallet can be used on your existing racks, send the supplier a photo or drawing of the rack together with the beam spacing, pallet size, and load weight.

This is more useful than simply asking for a "heavy-duty pallet."

 

4. Check Forklift and Pallet Jack Compatibility

Pallet size must also match the handling equipment used in the facility.

Buyers should confirm fork width, fork spacing, fork thickness, fork entry height, entry direction, and whether the pallet will be handled by forklift or hand pallet truck.

Some pallets provide four-way forklift entry but have different access conditions for hand pallet trucks because of their bottom structure.

For example, a three-runner pallet, nine-leg pallet, and full-perimeter pallet may all have the same overall dimensions but work differently with handling equipment.

For bulk projects, provide the model or fork dimensions of your existing equipment if compatibility is uncertain.

 

5. Check the Storage Space

Confirm that the pallet dimensions fit the actual warehouse.

Important measurements include rack opening, floor storage area, aisle width, maximum stacking height, door dimensions, lift dimensions, and conveyor width.

For example, a warehouse designed around a 1200 × 1000 mm pallet footprint may not operate efficiently if a wider custom pallet is introduced.

6. Consider Transportation Requirements

The pallet should also fit the transportation method.

For export projects, the receiving customer should confirm the required footprint whenever possible.

Before purchasing, confirm the required footprint, material, load capacity, deck style, bottom structure, color, hygiene requirements, identification requirements, and customer-specific standards.

Do not select a pallet only because its size is common in the destination country.
